Trans-Frontier Maps of the Survey of India
A set of 51 historical maps of South Asia produced from about 1880 to 1910 by the Survey of India, showing the "Frontier Areas" of the British Empire as it expanded over the years. Maps were produced in four sets (North-East Trans-Frontier, South-East Trans-Frontier, North-West Trans-Frontier and Northern Trans-Frontier). Because much of the information in these maps was the result of intelligence operations they were usually issued with "Secret" or "For Official Use Only" designations. New maps were issued irregularly as new information became available, usually from intelligence sources. Maps were issued at scales ranging from 8 miles to an inch on down to two miles per inch. Today these maps are held mainly in the British Library and the university collections at Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh.
