Americae Pars Magis Cognita

Theodore De Bry fue un orfebre, grabador y editor de importancia mayor en la historia de los impresos y grabados europeos sobre América. Nacido en Liega (actual Bélgica) en el seno de una familia protestante acomodada, dejó su ciudad natal huyendo de las persecuciones y guerras religiosas de la década de 1560 en los Países Bajos. Se radicó en Frankfurt, donde gozó del clima de relativa tolerancia religiosa que vivió la ciudad bajo los emperadores Maximiliano II y Rodolfo II. Les Grands Voyages fue publicado desde 1590 en doce partes dedicadas a la conquista de América (más aquellas dedicadas a las conquistas en Asia y conocidas como Petits Voyages), y fue ampliado por sus herederos hasta medio siglo después de su muerte, ocurrida en 1598. Les Grands Voyages contiene una valoración crítica de la conquista española del Nuevo Mundo con base en las descripciones de Bartolomé de las Casas, José de Acosta, Girolamo Benzoni, y muchos otros autores de la época. Esta crítica de España en la obra de De Bry haría parte de lo que luego se denominó la “leyenda negra española”. Aunque De Bry es recordado principalmente por sus grabados sobre las crueldades de los conquistadores españoles sobre los indígenas, y el carácter bárbaro y salvaje de los nativos, De Bry también incursionó en la cartografía, elaborando algunos mapas para su obra, entre los que destaca este “Americae Pars Magis Cognita” de 1592, uno de los más importantes mapas de América de finales del siglo XVI. Mientras que la cantidad y la calidad de los detalles del mapa demuestran la destreza como grabador de De Bry, la presencia del escudo de Francia en la parte superior derecha da cuenta, en cambio, de las opiniones políticas del mismo. En 1592 Felipe II Rey de España era también Rey de Portugal, y como tal soberano de toda América, por lo cual no sorprende la presencia del escudo español en la parte superior izquierda del mapa. Lo que resulta intrigante es la presencia del escudo de Francia en el mapa. Esto hubiera tenido mayor sentido a mediados del siglo XVI, cuando Francia era el único rival serio de España en Norteamérica y cuando corsarios e intrusos franceses podían constituir una molestia para los españoles en el Caribe. En 1562 el rey de Francia había autorizado la fundación de colonias francesas de protestantes hugonotes en La Florida, lo que provocó una violenta reacción de las autoridades españolas, que masacraron a los colonos franceses en 1565, enviando un mensaje contundente a las potencias rivales europeas, y de intolerancia al protestantismo en América. Solo hasta la primera década del siglo XVII los franceses y los ingleses iniciaron nuevamente aventuras coloniales en Norteamérica. Al incluir el escudo de Francia en el mapa, De Bry estaba reivindicando simbólicamente la memoria de los protestantes hugonotes franceses masacrados en La Florida. La inclusión del escudo de Francia servía en todo caso para criticar el monopolio español en América, tal y como era recurrente en los textos de los autores escogidos por De Bry para Les Grands Voyages.
