East Dereham

1 : 31680 The western boundary of this plan is formed by the Peddars Way, a Roman road laid down circa AD61. The ruins of Castle Acre are depicted along this road. Excavations here have uncovered a unique grain-processing plant, comprising a granary, a barn, a kilnhouse, a malthouse and a brewhouse. To the north-east of the castle are the ruins of a former priory belonging to the Cluniac Order, set on an incline above the River Nar. This small river, highlighted in blue on the plan, provided the priory with the greater part of its water supply via a 'monastic drain' - a general descriptive term for fenland drainage systems characterised by large overflow ditches. Metcalf, Edward B.

1 : 31680 The words 'Trig Point' are noted to the far left of the drawing, below Bodney. They indicate points from which angular measurements were taken in order to plot accurately the location of prominent landscape features. The pencil interlining ('hachuring') and shading that indicate relief have been lightly applied, leaving the road network clearly visible. The detail with which the roads are rendered is indicative of the Ordnance Survey's military imperative. Metcalf, Edward B.

Feltwell St. Nicholas

1 : 31680 The pecked red line following the course of the Little Ouse marks the county boundary of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Drawn on the left of the sheet, along the Ouse Valley, is a patchwork of arable land divided by straight water-filled dykes, typical features of the fens landscape. This elaborate system of drains and river diversions was designed in the 17th century by a Dutch engineer called Vermuyden. It made possible the conversion of pasture to arable land in this region. The Fens

This is a map of the fenlands dating from around 1603. It is thought to be the model for Hondius's "A generall plotte of the Fennes" published in Amsterdam in 1632 and is signed Ro. Cotton. The map shows the area in some detail, generalised representations of churches represent small settlements. Larger towns such as Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds' are shown in more detail with individualised red roofed buildings. The sands or the washes are indicated by dotted lines and a beacon is marked on the sands. A notable feature of the drawing is the proliferation of windmills as the wind from the sea can move inland unhindered by hills.
