Para armar sus atlas, los Ottens solían simplemente copiar o reimprimir mapas de otros cartógrafos holandeses y franceses. Este mapa del Istmo de Panamá evidencia, en cambio, adaptaciones y mejoras significativas de los Ottens a la Carte Particuliere De Isthmus ou Darien publicada por Pierre Mortier en 1700, poniendo particular énfasis en las islas, islotes, cayos, bajos, arenas, etc., del litoral centroamericano, así como en el relieve y la hidrografía del istmo y del continente. El mapa muestra el Istmo de Panamá y sus alrededores incluyendo parte de las provincias de Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Veragua, Darién, Cartagena y Santa Marta. Incluye un plano sobre la bahía de Cartagena “Carte de la Rade de Cartagene et de ses environs” y otro sobre una parte del Istmo “Rade de Darien et les Isles aux environs” en la que resalta la ciudad de “New Edimburgh” como capital de “New Caledonia”, un intento frustrado de colonización escocesa de la región entre 1698 y 1700. La propia existencia de este mapa da cuenta del asedio que a finales del siglo XVIII sufría imperio español en la zona: primero la toma de Cartagena por los franceses en cabeza del Barón de Pointis en 1697, y luego el experimento de colonización escocesa del Darién de 1698. El balance de fuerzas cambiaría con la llegada de la dinastía de los Borbones a España, que generaría una alianza entre España y Francia contra Gran Bretaña Mortier, Pierre (1661 - 1711)
