Manuscript Plan of Cambridge 44

A hand drawn plan or sketch by Nicholas Hawksmoor of the city centre of Cambridge. He shows the main street plan, although he was not a mapmaker and it is not intended to be accurate. He seems most interested in the area where Trinity Street, Kings Parade and Petty Curvy meet. He was planning some improvements and this drawing seems to be suggesting an open piazza incorporating St Mary's Church, Kings College, Clare Hall and other university buildings. Several years earlier in c.1713, Hawksmoor was employed to design a new court for King's College. He planned a grand Baroque style court, 90 metres square, with giant columns and pilasters. Neither of these ideas were ever built and were considered very radical for their time. Hawksmoor, Nicholas

Cambridge 23

1 : 31680 Two types of landscapes characterise this part of Cambridgeshire. South of the City of Cambridge itself, a broad band of low, rolling chalk hills is intersected by river valleys. By contrast, the landscape at top right is fenland where arable expanses are divided by straight, water-filled dykes. Hyett, William
